Chinese aluminum foil producers plan to challenge US ruling that imposedduties of up to ~80% on foil imports. China Nonferrous Metals IndustryAssociation is leading the case which will be filed with US International TradeCommission this month. Also, China’s Ministry of Commerce claims that UShad ignored offers of co-operation from the government and Chinesecompanies and had no grounds to accuse Chinese firms of benefiting fromsubsidies. Tensions between the two economies are now heightened as furtheraction against imports is expected from Section 232. (Reuters)
US Commerce Department imposes countervailing duties ranging from16.56% to 80.97% on aluminum foil imports from China. US foil producers hadfiled petitions, accusing Chinese producers of receiving subsidies and“dumping” the product. US Aluminum Association applauded the movewhereas China claimed it would hurt US downstream firms in the softpackaging industry. Preliminary anti-dumping determination by Commerce isexpected on Oct 5. In 2016, imports of foil were valued at $389m. (Reuters)
